Before we talk about your studio, tell us abour yourself as an artist.
My work has changed and there is a formal beauty that comes out in my work that I just let happen and don’t worry about it. I used to worry about it being too pretty but now I don’t worry about it. But, content wise, there is a lot of human rights issues about being gay and the politics around it.
Where is your studio located?
In my home. I really don’t like it there and would prefer to have it off location….where I go to work. When I had a studio off site, it didn’t matter if I read, napped or made art because it was far enough away that I didn’t go home. But now I can do laundry, water the yard and decide to have lunch at anytime because its at home. When I had an off-site studio, I was at work. Although having it at home has its advantages, I found that when I worked off-site I scheduled time to be there whereas now its more convenient not to be there.

Any tips for studio organization?
Its best to keep your finished work away from your work area because artists’ studios are not typically known for cleanliness.
What advice would you give to a new artist?
Get your work out of the house. If you don’t show your work, it’s the same as if you have never created it because no one else has seen it. Duchamp said “it’s not complete until the communication act is completed.”
Any favorite books you like to keep in your studio library?
I keep a lot of books on Greek Sculpture, human anatomy, contemporary art and a lot of books on drawing. Contemporary art books tend to move in and out of my studio a lot because I don’t like to keep them down there to get dirty.
